Democratic women in Kansas had a good night on Tuesday.
Women swept the Democratic primary in the state, and all five Democratic congressional nominees on the state’s November ballot will be women.
Barbara Bollier, a physician and Republican-turned-Democrat, will face Republican Roger Marshall in a U.S. Senate race. Democrats Kali Barnett, Michelle De La Isla and Laura Lombard will be on House ballots along with Rep. Sharice Davids, who was first elected in 2018.
Here is how women fared in Tuesday’s primary in Kansas, as well as others held in Arizona, Michigan, Missouri and Washington:
Kansas
Davids, who flipped her seat in 2018, will face Republican Amanda Adkins, a former chairwoman of the state party, in what is expected to be a competitive race.
In the Republican Senate primary, Marshall beat Kris Kobach, a former secretary of state and chair of the Kansas Republican Party who is best known for his controversial immigration stances. Marshall’s win portends a competitive general election battle with Bollier, who is vying to be the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the Senate since 1932.
Arizona
The state’s Senate race in November will be a faceoff between Democrat Mark Kelly and Republican Sen. Martha McSally.
In Arizona’s nine congressional district primaries, Democratic and Republican incumbents alike were victorious. Several Democratic women will take on Republican incumbents in November. In the 1st District, Tiffany Shedd is leading Nolan Reidhead in the Republican primary, but the race is not yet called. In the 4th District, Democrat Delina DiSanto will challenge Republican Rep. Paul Gosar. In the 5th District, Democrat Joan Greene will take on Republican Rep. Andy Biggs. In the 6th District, Hiral Tipirneni, a doctor, will go up against Republican Rep. David Schweikert.
Michigan
Michigan has a Senate seat up for grabs this year, and incumbent Democrat Gary Peters will be competing against Republican challenger John James.
In the state’s 14 congressional districts, most incumbents from both parties are on track to win their primaries, including Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin (8th District), Haley Stevens (11th District), Debbie Dingell (12th District), Rashida Tlaib (13th District) and Brenda Lawrence (14th District).
In Michigan’s 10th District, Democrat Kimberly Bizon will face Republican Lisa McClain in November.
Missouri
In Missouri, Democrat Nicole Galloway, currently the state auditor, handily won the primary to take on Republican Gov. Mike Parson in November. Democrat Alissia Canady will challenge Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe.
In the 1st District’s Democratic primary, progressive Cori Bush, an activist in the racial justice movement, beat incumbent William Lacy Clay Jr., a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, after failing to oust him in 2018. In the 2nd District, Republican incumbent Ann Wagner ran unopposed and will face Democrat Jill Schupp. In the 3rd District, Democrat Megan Rezabek will take on Republican Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer. Republican incumbent Vicky Hartzler won in the 4th District and will face a challenge from Democrat Lindsey Simmons. In the 6th District, Democrat Gena Ross will likely challenge Republican Rep. Sam Graves. In the 7th District, Democrat Teresa Montseny will take on Republican incumbent Billy Long. In the 8th District, Democrat Kathy Ellis will challenge Rep. Jason Smith.
Voters in Missouri also backed a ballot proposition to expand Medicaid.
Washington
Washington has a congressional primary wherein the top two finishers advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. The state also votes almost exclusively by mail with a postmark deadline of Aug. 4, so Tuesday’s primary results are not yet final.
At press time, the state’s incumbents were on track to advance to November’s elections, including Democrats Suzan DelBene in the 1st District, Pramila Jayapal in the 7th District and Kim Schrier in the 8th District and Republicans Jaime Herrera Beutler in the 3rd District and Cathy McMorris Rodgers in the 5th District. Democrat Carolyn Long will be challenging Beutler. Republican Elizabeth Kreiselmaier will be challenging Democratic Rep. Derek Kilmer in the 6th District. The 10th District is shaping up to be a Democrat versus Democrat race between Marilyn Strickland and Beth Doglio.
