The nation’s leading LGBTQ+ organizations are calling for the immediate removal of President Donald Trump after a violent insurrection at the Capitol Wednesday that stalled the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Lambda Legal, the Human Rights Campaign, the National LGBTQ Task Force, GLAAD, the Transgender Law Center, The National Center for Lesbian Rights, and others have issued forceful statements condemning Wednesday’s riot that left five dead. The groups called on leaders to invoke the 25th Amendment to impeach the president, who continues to erroneously claim he lost the presidential election due to voter fraud. 

The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members to remove the president if he is unable to fulfill his duties. Other lawmakers, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, also called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25 Amendment. 

Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David called for Trump’s immediate impeachment in a statement to the media.

“The Human Rights Campaign urgently calls for the immediate removal of President Donald Trump from office,” David said. “President Trump bears responsibility for Wednesday’s insurrection at the United States Capitol and the attempted coup of our government in which four people died.” (At the time the statement was issued, the fifth person had not yet died.)

David’s statement came alongside the announcement that out Rep. David Cicilline along with Reps. Ted Lieu and Jamie Raskin had circulated Articles of Impeachment.

In a statement to The 19th, Shelby Chestnut, director of policy and programs at the Transgender Law Center, blamed the government for what they said was white supremacist “mob violence,” the same ideology that has fueled violence against Black people and Black trans women in particular.

“We echo calls for impeachment and removal of President Trump, as well as Representative [Cori] Bush’s call to expel members of Congress who, by opposing the certification of lawful election results, fueled Trump’s direct incitement of violent, insurrectionist white supremacists,” Chestnut said. 

Lambda Legal, the nation’s leading LGBTQ+ legal nonprofit, called the events an “unprecedented” betrayal of American rule of law and urged leaders to replace Trump.

“Our democratic processes must be defended, and we call upon our leaders to utilize any and all processes available to them, including the 25th Amendment, to ensure an orderly transition of power in accordance with the will of the American people as expressed freely at the ballot box in November,” said Lambda Legal CEO Kevin Jennings in a media statement. 

LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization GLAAD pressed social media companies to permanently ban the president from their platforms.

“He is directly responsible for the deaths, violence and terror inflicted at the Capitol on Wednesday,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. “For the safety of our country and democracy, Facebook’s ‘indefinite’ ban on Donald Trump needs to be permanent. As the global LGBTQ media advocacy organization, GLAAD is calling on Twitter and CEO Jack Dorsey to also ban President Trump permanently before he puts more people in danger.”

The National LGBTQ Task Force, which has led most of the successful field campaigns for LGBTQ+ equality over the past four decades, also called for Trump’s immediate removal. In a statement, Executive Director Rea Carey called the president a threat to democracy and human life.

“If Trump is able to make one more call to the Acting Secretary of Defense, it would be one call too many,” Carey said. “If Trump is able to push through one more regulation, it would be one too many. He abandoned his post and responsibility long ago, and we have watched in horror with each swing of his golf club, as more Americans die.”
