Maya, Community Organizer @ SFQP (in photos 26, 27, 30, 33-35, 37, & group images): ÒI started working with SFQP about 6 years ago, when I started performing with them and then began volunteering. Once I learned that they allow people to organize events for queer folks in the city, I knew I wanted to get more involved. Queer folks have been marginalized throughout time but often queer folks, whether they know it or not, naturally end up creating safe spaces for everyone; like I’ve brought straight and non-queer folks into certain spaces where they also feel very welcome. With queer folks being demonized politically right now, I think itÕs important for everyone to examine what they think queerness looks like and consider people in their own lives that could be queer. We try to create spaces that say Òcome as you areÓ, because weÕre not having this at a club, or at night time, so no one has to get super dressed up. If you want to come here in pajamas, in a tank top and shorts, itÕs fine with us.Ó (Maya also told me that this event was intentionally a sober one, to further add to the safety and inclusiveness of it.)
