Who gets to tell their own stories and depict their own communities? Representation in Hollywood, and in every creative industry, starts at the top and has major repercussions for audiences’ senses of self and identity. That’s why the decision of who is at the helm is an important one.
While the media industry is in the midst of a reckoning about fairness and equity with dual labor strikes, conversations around who gets a seat at the table continue apace. The 19th and Poderistas collaborated to bring these discussions to light and a celebration of Latinx Heritage Month with high-profile creators including Eva Longoria, Gloria Calderón Kellett, Dani Fernandez and Linda Yvette Chávez.
Together we dove into the ways that Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+ and other underrepresented communities are impacted by strong and accurate representation of their lives on screen and in popular media.
The intimate and impactful free event featured a special performance by singer and rapper Audrey Nuna and a reception.
